In preparation of the Hannover meeting of the DigCompAE project, we summarize internally our ideas how we at VHS Hannover want to integrate the DigComp framework into our everday work. We have quite comprehensive plans: Digital competences shall be systematically taken into account in all processes of planning and delivering adult education courses.

January 2024
The original DigComp names 21 digital compentences, grouped into 5 areas. The competences are described with sentences such as "2.1. Interacting through digital technologies." In our own adaption of the model, we decided to rather use "me"-sentences. The same competence in our version is called "I am able to use different media to communicate and interact with others."

When we started into planning how do address these areas (and the competences therein) in our everyday practice as an adult education provider, we quickly recogized that - from our perspective - something was missing: an area that would include very basic skills such as switching on a computer, or being able to type on a keyboard. In adult education, we often work with people who have very little formal education, and basic skills are an important issue.

A thing we were aware of from the very beginning was that for being able to integrate DigComp into our everyday work processes, we need our staff here at VHS Hannover be aware of what DigComp is. And not only this: our staff should have developed a well-founded attitude towards it. This could only be achieved through active work with the concept. Reading papers alone would not suffice. As adult educators we know that some of the best (and most lasting) learning results are achieved when learning takes places in a group, and when it involves discussion, and multipiple perspectives.

Did we focus too much on digital skills, and did we forget people who do not want to be bothered with this at all? Here some thoughts on this.
A word about "digital" versus "analogue"

October 2025
There is a problem with terminology. DigComp is meant to help define "digital" skills of citizens, as a step towards helping citizens to improve these skills. But what are "digital" skills? And how are they different from "analogue skills"?
