What VHS Hannover initially planned to do

January 2024

In preparation of the Hannover meeting of the DigCompAE project, we summarize internally our ideas how we at VHS Hannover want to integrate the DigComp framework into our everday work. We have quite comprehensive plans: Digital competences shall be systematically taken into account in all processes of planning and delivering adult education courses.

Why we prefer "me"-sentences

January 2024

The original DigComp names 21 digital compentences, grouped into 5 areas. The competences are described with sentences such as "2.1. Interacting through digital technologies." In our own adaption of the model, we decided to rather use "me"-sentences. The same competence in our version is called "I am able to use different media to communicate and interact with others."

Why we added a sixth area and called it „zero“

Oktober 2024

When we started into planning how do address these areas (and the competences therein) in our everyday practice as an adult education provider, we quickly recogized that - from our perspective - something was missing: an area that would include very basic skills such as switching on a computer, or being able to type on a keyboard. In adult education, we often work with people who have very little formal education, and basic skills are an important issue.

First plans for inhouse-workshop

November 2024

A thing we were aware of from the very beginning was that for being able to integrate DigComp into our everyday work processes, we need our staff here at VHS Hannover be aware of what DigComp is. And not only this: our staff should have developed a well-founded attitude towards it. This could only be achieved through active work with the concept. Reading papers alone would not suffice. As adult educators we know that some of the best (and most lasting) learning results are achieved when learning takes places in a group, and when it involves discussion, and multipiple perspectives.

March 2025

An issue yet undecided at VHS Hannover is whether - and how - to include information not only about entry but also exit levels.

At VHS Hannover, we are only a few step away from making our DigComp level classifications for our courses public. However, now there are growing concerns.

Did we focus too much on digital skills, and did we forget people who do not want to be bothered with this at all? Here some thoughts on this.

A word about "digital" versus "analogue"

Details

October 2025

There is a problem with terminology. DigComp is meant to help define "digital" skills of citizens, as a step towards helping citizens to improve these skills. But what are "digital" skills? And how are they different from "analogue skills"?

When we looked back and saw the path

May 2026 There was no special ceremony in the classroom. No balloons, no thank-you speeches. On the table stood a tray of homemade cookies brought by one of the participants, and on the screen was a simple document titled: “What I know today that I didn’t know before.” I…

When we realized we were learning together

March 2026 At one of our recent workshops, we asked participants to write down what they had learned over the past few months in a shared online document. The document was open on a large screen, and everyone could see the text being updated in real time. At first, there was…

When we saw the fear fade away

February 2026 “Today, I’ll be the first.” When Marija said this, there was a brief silence in the room. A few months ago, she had been sitting in the back row. She rarely asked questions. She often quietly observed others and jotted down the steps, as if gathering the courage…

When we realized that the digital world had become part of everyday life

January 2026 “I just wrote my opinion.” Tanja said this somewhat agitatedly as she described a situation on social media. She had left a comment under a post about a local event. Someone replied to her sharply, almost insultingly. The discussion quickly escalated. “I didn’t mean…

When we first heard that confident click

December 2025 “Wait… I think I know what’s wrong.” That’s what Robert said in the middle of class when the projector suddenly stopped displaying the image from his computer. A few months earlier, he would have slumped back in his chair and said, “I’ve broken something again.”…

The first time we saw someone helping someone else

November 2025 “Wait, I’ll show you.” Katarina said this almost spontaneously when she noticed that Peter was having trouble inserting an image into a document. A few weeks earlier, she herself had asked for help with the same task. Now she leaned toward him and calmly explained:…
