After identifying the need for flexible and context-specific assessment tools, Scuola Centrale Formazione developed a simple and adaptable method to help trainers create their own tools based on the DigComp 2.2 framework. This approach is especially powerful in settings like the GOL Plan or courses for unemployed adults, migrants, or people with disabilities - contexts where a one-size-fits-all tool often falls short.

Here’s our step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Choose the Most Relevant Competences

DigComp is structured into 5 main areas. Start by identifying the one or two areas most relevant to your course or learner group (e.g., “Communication and collaboration” or “Safety”). Then, within those areas, select the specific competences (Dimension 2 and 3 of DigComp) that are most essential for your learners.

Step 2: Select Practical Examples from the Framework

Look at Dimension 4 of DigComp: the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with the competences you selected. Choose the ones that feel most concrete and applicable to your learners.

Step 3: Write Your Own Questions

Based on the examples you chose, develop 1–3 short questions per competence that reflect real-life situations. The goal is to assess the learner’s digital competence in a practical and accessible way. Make sure your questions reflect situations learners may actually encounter.

Step 5: Use the Results to Personalize Learning

The final and most important step: use what you’ve learned to design a personalized learning path. Focus on the areas where learners need the most support, and create activities that match their level of competence.

By empowering educators to build their own tools, we bring DigComp closer to the classroom and make it a living part of SCF’s educational practice.
